Turret, Colorado! My buddy Kent was looking
for something to do and I suggested that he take me up to Turret, an old ghost town
located in the mountains about twelve miles northeast of Salida. (In town, I picked
up the adjacent informational brochure with a great photo of Turret taken in 1901.) |
 |
How to get there: From Salida, take Chaffee County Road 175
(the same turnoff for Spiral Drive)
and take it way into the mountains. Eventually,
the road will fork and veer left on Chaffee County Road 185. The signs to Turret at
clearly marked at that point. During non-summer months, I suggest having a 4-wheel
drive vehicle, for the roads were somewhat bumpy and muddy from recently melted snow.
Here's the view of Turret as we approached from Kent's truck. |

Turret definitely has an authentic western ghost town look.
Here are just a few original buildings around town.

This particular structure caught my eye. |
 |
Things are definitely happening in Turret of late. As seen in the adjacent photos,
some of the old structures are being rebuilt and refurbished as residences. There were
many for sale signs for parcels and restored homes. |
 |
We walked up the dirt road that acted as the main corridor
during Turret's busier days and I spotted these really tall and old cottonwoods.
I think those are the tallest cottonwoods I've ever seen. |
 |
I snapped two photos of this particular structure. Just amazing!

Um, Kent needed to use a restroom and knocked on the door of this outhouse.
Good heavens! :p) |
 |
We arrived at Turret in the late afternoon,
as the sun sat behind the Sawatch Mountains. Still,
I managed to "fight off the sun" to capture this view of Mt. Antero. |

Folks, if you love old Colorado ghost towns, Turret is a place to see! |
