Southern Chaffee County
Photos From The Mt. Shavano Picnic Area And Other Mountain Pictures - January 2, 2006
 |
I leave for Arizona in three days and so I'm trying
to cram more Colorado scenery photos
for all of you! Along Highway 285 a few miles north of
Poncha Springs, is a rest area with a historic sign
about Zebulon Pike's expedition in the Arkansas River valley in 1806. |
 |
And the views from here are awesome!
To the west is the grand view of Mt. Shavano (alt. 14,229 feet). In the middle photo,
I zoomed-in to show where the "Angel of Shavano" often
resides in the valley above timberline.
With all the snow we've had of late, the angel was whitened out. |
 |
Here's the view of Mt. Princeton toward the north. |
 |
Facing east across Highway 285, the pinion covered mountains don't
get much respect with the Sawatch Mountains standing so tall. |
 |
I "fought off" the sun to snap the view of northern most part of the Sangre De Cristo Mountain range. |
 |
To the southwest, was the view of Mt. Ouray (alt. 13,971 feet) and Chipita Peak. |
 |
One last view. Facing north-northeast, here's the view of Highway 285
running northbound with the Buffalo Peaks peaking their heads to the left. ;) |
