Cowles Mountain
I had been in San Diego for a few days and as a Coloradan, I was itching to stand on top of a mountain. I chose to hike Cowles Mountain, the tallest peak in the city of San Diego, which stands at 1,592 feet above sea level at the summit.

The 1.5 mile trail is clearly marked and great for training, leisure hikes and enjoying the scenery around San Diego. I began at the main trailhead (adjacent photos) at the junction of Navajo Road and Golfcrest Drive.

Cowles Mountain
This is not a long and necessarily rigorous hike for Colorado standards, and in fact, I reached the summit in just 42 minutes. Still, there were many pretty views of San Diego and the Pacific Ocean to the west.
Cowles Mountain The summit of Cowles Mountain. (It's pronounced "Coals".)
Cowles Mountain I zoomed-in on a sign. I must say the Mission Trails Regional Park of San Diego is quite an impressive area with trails and open space that is untouched by San Diego development.

The rest of these photos were taken at the summit of Cowles Mountain. The nicest views were undoubtedly toward the west, where one can see downtown San Diego and the Pacific coast. Unfortunately, the sun was in the west, which made these photos poor in quality.

Suggestion: If you are seeking great pictures toward San Diego and the ocean, hike up there early in the morning!
